Key Optical Performance
• The "Leica Glow" & Character:
Shot wide open at f/2, the v3 delivers a distinct vintage rendering. Highlights have a gentle, organic "glow," and the background bokeh is exceptionally smooth, though some users note that edge transitions are more smeary compared to modern ASPH designs.
• Sharpness & Contrast:
Center sharpness is excellent and punchy even wide open. Interestingly, the v3 often displays a slightly higher mid-tone contrast in the center than the celebrated v4, though its corner-to-corner resolution drops off and cannot compete with modern ASPH alternatives.
• Flare & Vignette:
The lens is heavily prone to unpredictable, stylistic lens flare. If you enjoy creative flare, it's a feature; if you require sterile perfection, it will require a dedicated hood (like the Leica 12504 hood). Distortion is incredibly low and vignette is minimal.
