THE END OF THE LINE
Essays on Psychoanalysis and the Sublime
Neil Hertz
The End of the Line is a collection of essays written for a variety of occasions but linked by their common interest in the appearance of the idiom of the sublime.
In a wide range of texts—in Longinus' treatise, in the poetry of Milton and Wordsworth, in the nominally "realist" prose fiction of George Eliot and Flaubert, in Freud's psychoanalytic writings, as well as in the work of historians and philosophers, teachers and critics and journalists-the essays pursue the implications of related turns of thought and of figuration. In particular they dwell on the emergence in these texts of characters who serve (fleetingly or in a more fully elaborated way) as surrogates of authorial activity, tracing the scenarios of doubling in which these surrogates are invariably caught up, their interaction with the figurative language around them, and the gestures of sacrifice that mark their departure "at the end of the line."
Neil Hertz taught for many years in the English Department at Cornell Universitt
