Varebeskrivelse

Yes, this is an older book, and not all of the posters are illustrated in color-- but ..
If you collect posters or you're intrigued by the posters created during the American Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau eras, (1890-1910), this book is an exceptional valuable fascinating investment..
The 24 colour pictures are superb.
(137 Black/white illustrations).
The first half of the book contains essays by :
Frederick Brandt ("Posters, Patrons, and Publishers"),
Robert Koch ("Signs of the Times: The Artists") and
Phillip Meggs (his essay is "Turn-of-the-Century American Posters: Art + Technology = Graphic Design" )
These essays describe why posters that were intended to promote books and magazines became "collectables" in their own right at the turn of the 20th century, why works by U.S. poster artists such as Will Bradley, Edward Penfield, Maxfield Parrish, and Ethel Reed were admired worldwide, and how emerging technologies for printing assisted the "poster craze."
The rest of the book is a catalog of 111 posters, created in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and collected by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
There's a small black-and-white illustration of each poster (many of the posters appear in color in the first half of the book), as well as biographical information about 45 poster artists.
This book is for everybody with interest in a fascinating period of American design history and
Interest in vintage American advertising posters from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The book captures USA after Industrial Revolution, with better machines and busier factories, Improved schools and a shorter work week .
Although better machines meant better business, the change was greatest in the printing industry, where faster, cheaper, more efficient print technology opened the floodgates of mass communication.
The growing demand of leisure-time reading was met with dime novels, and little magazines.
In the heat of competition, savvy publishers commission some of America's finest artists and illustrators to design posters as part of their aggressive ad campaigns.
Posters, designed to sell, blossom into a "golden age." As Americans' passion for posters heats into a full-blown poster craze, the posters soon overshadow the products they were meant to promote.
Superb fascinating book.
