DOUGLAS M-2 MAIL PLANE
The Douglas M-2, built in Santa Monica, California, was put into commercial airline service by Western Air Express on April 17, 1926. Now known as Western Airlines, America's First Half-Century Airline, the pioneer carrier still serves its original
651-mile Contract Air Mail route, between Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Salt Lake City in its present 27,000 mile route system. Western's first aircraft, the M-2, carried a pilot and 1,000 pounds of cargo or two passengers. It was powered by a 415h.p. Liberty engine and cruised at 115 miles per hour. The M-2's remained in service until 1932.
