The Story and Condition
The absolute pinnacle of late-1960s Japanese horology. The 61GS series is legendary among collectors, representing the culmination of Suwa Seikosha’s pursuit of the ultimate mechanical wristwatch. Crafted under Taro Tanaka’s famous "Grammar of Design" rules, this Ref. 6145-8000 features a masterfully sculpted stainless steel case with sharp, flat surfaces and crisp angles designed to interact brilliantly with the light.
The dial is a masterclass in elegant restraint, featuring a pristine silver-white finish, razor-sharp dauphine hands, and multi-faceted applied indices that offer incredible legibility. Turning the watch over reveals one of its most prized features: an original, beautifully preserved solid gold GS medallion on the case back. These medallions are highly sought after by collectors and finding one intact and in such superb condition is becoming increasingly rare.
To complete the classic, sophisticated aesthetic, this Grand Seiko has been paired with a high-quality black leather strap with subtle contrast stitching, making it the perfect dress watch or elevated daily wearer.
The Value of a Fully Serviced Movement
Powering this masterpiece is the esteemed Caliber 6145, a 25-jewel automatic movement beating at an ultra-fast 36,000 beats per hour (10 beats per second). This "Hi-Beat" technology gives the seconds hand a mesmerizing, flawlessly smooth sweep and allows for highly accurate timekeeping. It also features hand-winding capabilities, a hacking seconds function, and a quickset date.
Because 36,000 bph movements operate under immense physical stress, finding one that has been properly maintained is crucial. Buying an unserviced Hi-Beat can lead to excessive wear on the internal components. Thankfully, this 61GS has been newly and thoroughly overhauled by professional watchmakers. The entire movement was completely dismantled, ultrasonically cleaned, freshly lubricated with specialized oils, and expertly regulated. By purchasing a freshly serviced piece, you are ensuring this magnificent engine runs safely, accurately, and is ready to be worn for years to come.
