John Wells blev født i London og tilbragte sine første år i Ditchling, Sussex. Han tog aftenundervisning på Saint Martin's School of Art fra 1927 til 1928, mens han studerede til en medicinsk grad på University College Hospital og udstillede på Daily Express Young Artists Exhibition i 1927. Hans mor var Cornish og fra 1936 til 1945 arbejdede han som en Praktiserende læge for Scillyøerne. Efter Anden Verdenskrig besluttede han at forfølge en fuldtidskarriere som kunstner. På det tidspunkt bosatte han sig i Newlyn, Cornwall og blev tæt involveret i det berømte kunstneriske samfund i den nærliggende by St. Ives. Fra 1967 delte Wells sit atelier i Newlyn med sin kunstner og ven Denis Mitchell.
Han var medstifter af Crypt Group og Penwith Society of Arts. Han arbejdede sammen med Barbara Hepworth fra 1950 til 1951 og udstillede regelmæssigt i London, provinserne og i udlandet. Hans arbejde er repræsenteret i Tate Gallery. Hans værker af geometrisk abstraktion var påvirket af Gabo, Ben Nicholson og Barbara Hepworth.
Wells døde den 28. juli 2000 på Penwith-halvøen, på den sydvestlige spids af Cornwall.
En udstilling afholdt på Tate St Ives i 2007, fejrede hundredeåret for hans fødsel

John Wells was born in London and spent his early years in Ditchling, Sussex. He took evening classes at Saint Martin's School of Art from 1927 to 1928, while studying for a medical degree at University College Hospital and exhibited at the Daily Express Young Artists Exhibition in 1927. His mother was Cornish and from 1936 to 1945 he worked as a General Practitioner for the Isles of Scilly. After the Second World War he decided to pursue a full-time career as an artist. At that time he settled in Newlyn,
Cornwall and became closely involved in the renowned artistic community of the nearby town of St. Ives. From 1967 Wells shared his studio in Newlyn with his artist and friend Denis Mitchell. He was a co-founder of the Crypt Group and the Penwith Society of Arts. He worked with Barbara Hepworth from 1950 to 1951 and exhibited regularly in London, the provinces and abroad. His work is represented in the Tate Gallery. His works of geometric abstraction were influenced by Gabo, Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth. Wells died on 28 July 2000 on the Penwith Peninsula, on the south-western tip of Cornwall.
An exhibition held at Tate St Ives in 2007 celebrated the centenary of his birth
