Beskrivelse: "Dr. Robinson traces the development of the first and less understood half of operatic history, from the first opera Dafine of 1597 to the end of the eighteenth century, illustrating his narrative with well-chosen examples from works by composers such as Lully, Glück, Monteverdi and Händel, together with extracts from less familiar works. He discusses the origins of opera in Italy, the influence of the court , the aristocracy, and the populace, and the variations between tragic, comic and balletic opera."
