An Art Nouveau majolica jug from Gustavsberg, c. 1890–1920, decorated in relief with stylized floral motifs and garlands. The glaze palette — cobalt blue, ochre, green, and soft red — reflects the era’s fascination with strong colour contrasts and organic ornament. The jug exemplifies Gustavsberg’s contribution to the Scandinavian interpretation of Art Nouveau, influenced by continental design trends yet grounded in Nordic craftsmanship.
At the time, Gustavsberg was under the artistic leadership of figures such as Gunnar Wennerberg, who emphasized the fusion of functionality and beauty in everyday ceramics. Pieces like this were not only used for serving drinks but also displayed as decorative tableware, in line with the Art Nouveau movement’s idea of uniting art with daily life.
Condition:
Overall well-preserved with fine craquelure typical of age. Minor abrasions at rim and handle. Small chip at tip of spout. Some natural base discoloration. No structural cracks.
Fun fact: Majolica wares from Gustavsberg were exhibited internationally around 1900, contributing to Sweden’s growing reputation for design that combined artistry with industrial production.
