In This Wonderful book, All the greats of Pop Art are represented, including Warhol, Lichtenstein, Blake, Keinholz, and Rauschenberg.
The Pop Art movement was one that tried not to take itself too seriously, and that sense of fun is very evident in This book
Interesting and informative text,as well as large and clear reproductions of the icons of Pop,make this an excellent starting point on the subject.
It is Highly recommended and this is just a classic Taschen, the quality and size says it from a distance and it is just a must have for the coffee table.
The book is based around “Everything is beautiful,”” Andy Warhols comments on the glamour of modern life, consumer society, the world of the media and its stars. And in so saying, he was expressing the feelings of a generation who felt their age was dawning, an age of ””love”” and ””freedom.””
In art, too, a new attitude towards the present was making itself felt. Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Tom Wesselmann, Richard Hamilton and many other artists were discovering Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Coca Cola, comics, advertising, household appliances and food cans as an independent aesthetic reality. Popularity and triviality were no longer terms of abuse, but were central to a new understanding of an art whose aim was to break down the barriers between art and life.
Pop art is about ”the myths of everyday life”. Centuries ago artists painted images of Greek G Goddesses, but Pop Artists painted images of Marilyn Monroe, and many artist have painted ”bowls of fruits”, pop artists paint ”cans of soup”. Whether it's images of movie stars or corporate logos, Pop art is about focusing your attention on all the things that effect and shape modern society.
The author gives us a detailed account of the styles, themes and sources of Pop Art, investigating its development in different countries and providing biographies of its leading exponents and accompanied by many superb color pictures in 240 pages.
