In Ramtha's teachings, consciousness is the fundamental, unchanging awareness or the universal "I AM", while the mind is a tool or a phenomenon that uses the brain to create thoughts, perceptions, and experiences within that consciousness. Think of consciousness as the actor, the boundless field of being, and the mind as the temporary role or character the actor plays, complete with its specific thoughts and behaviors. The mind is a function that can be learned and changed, but consciousness is the underlying reality that makes all experience possible.
Consciousness
The Source:
Consciousness is the primary and universal principle of awareness itself, the fundamental essence of "I AM" that is the source of all existence.
Unchanging:
It is the unchanging, eternal awareness that is not affected by external events or the specific contents of thought.
Awareness:
It is the capacity to be aware, the foundational substrate upon which all experience occurs.
Mind
A Tool:
The mind is the mental faculty or tool that operates through the brain, not the brain itself.
Processes and Functions:
It encompasses the processes of thinking, reasoning, feeling, perceiving, and forming concepts.
Creator of Reality:
The mind uses attention and perception to create personal reality by interpreting experiences and creating thoughts.
Transient:
The mind is like a role in a play, a temporary function that can be altered, learned, and even discarded to create new patterns of thought.
The Relationship Between Consciousness and Mind:
Consciousness is the "I AM"; the Mind is the "Role":
Ramtha's teachings use the analogy of an actor (consciousness) playing a role in a drama (mind). The actor is the fundamental being, while the role is the temporary function.
The Mind Operates Within Consciousness:
The mind's activities occur within the greater field of consciousness, creating the subjective experiences of thoughts and emotions.
The Mind Can Be Changed:
Because the mind is a functional tool, it can be reconditioned to create new patterns of thought and perception by focusing one's attention and intentions, ultimately changing one's personal reality.
