André Cottavoz was born in 1922 in Saint-Marcellin near the town of Grenoble in France. He was passionate about painting from an early age, and so his mother encouraged him to continue to pursue his love. He began his art studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, France from which he graduated in 1945. He died in 2012.
Galerie Mourlot
Founded in 1852, in Paris, the Atelier Mourlot was originally a producer of fine wallpaper but came to be known for fine art lithographic printing in the early 20th century. The founder's grandson, Fernand Mourlot, took charge of Atelier Mourlot in the roaring twenties and saw museum attendance increase with the popularity of his exhibition posters. He built on this success and invited some of the most celebrated artists of the time to his studio to collaborate on traditional limestone lithography. Artists such as Miró and Picasso worked with Fernand to produce unique and visually striking lithographs that were often used as posters to promote the artists' work or exhibitions. While the studio closed in 1999, today Fernand’s grandson Eric Mourlot continues the legacy of the print shop through his gallery.
