"The Impossible" er den rystende og gribende sande historie om en families kamp for at overleve en af de mest ødelæggende naturkatastrofer i nyere tid – tsunamien i Sydøstasien 2. juledag 2004.
Maria (Naomi Watts), Henry (Ewan McGregor) og deres tre sønner holder juleferie i Thailand, da den gigantiske bølge rammer og river familien fra hinanden. Filmen følger familiens desperate kamp for at finde hinanden midt i kaosset og ødelæggelserne.
Med stærke præstationer, især fra Naomi Watts og unge Tom Holland, og med realistiske og følelsesladede scener, giver "The Impossible" et indgående blik på menneskelig styrke, håb og kærlighed i mødet med det ufattelige.
