Abstract: "The collection of about 1200 pairs of proverbs in Latin (leonine hexameters) and Danish which since the first half of the 15th century has been connected with the name Peder Laale occupies a prominent position among the early Germanic collections of proverbs. The earliest stratum of the collection probably originates from the mid-14th century and seems - in an established European tradition - to have been compiled for pedagogical purposes (teaching of wisdom and of Latin versification, synonymy, etc.). In many cases it is impos sible to decide whether the Latin version or the Danish version of each pair of proverbs is the primary one. But in some cases the Danish versions can be proved to represent old and genuine oral tradition, while in other cases the Danish versions are no doubt translations of the Latin lines.
Around 1977 Dr. Aage Hansen (1894-1983) after many productive years in Danish lexico graphy, grammar, syntax and phonology resumed his previous investigations into the Danish versions of the proverbs of Peder Laale. And at his death he left numerous preparato ry notes on loose slips plus a continuous manuscript in two different, extensively annotated, versions, neither of which could be considered quite definitive. Based on this material a new manuscript has now been prepared for printing. The editors have seen it as their task to try to establish the text which Aage Hansen would have published, if time had permitted. On one of the loose slips Aage Hansen states the purpose of his study: “The purpose is to give a philological and stylistic description of a characteristic medieval text."
